Rules for Conservation Commission Managed Properties

Be a good steward of the land by helping to ensure that the land remains in its natural state. Conservation Land is preserved for all the people of Medfield. The land is retained in its natural state for the preservation of wildlife and natural vegetation. Land preserved by the Conservation Commission includes wetlands, ponds, streams, and other water bodies. All lands are intentionally preserved in a natural, scenic, wild and open condition.

Such natural areas have important functions and values such as preservation of plant communities and wildlife habitat. They provide quality of life factors and sanctuaries for people of all ages. They are areas for passive recreation such as walking, birding, and observance of the diversity of wildlife habitat. It is critical that the land is maintained in its natural state.

The cutting of trees, shrubs, and any type of vegetation is forbidden on Conservation Land unless it has been previously approved by the Conservation Commission after a public hearing. Construction of structures, including boardwalks and bridges, also requires Conservation Commission approval. Public land cannot be used by abutters as an area for dumping leaves or cut brush. These types of human activities alter the natural state of the property. Conservation Land is not an extension of property owned by abutters.
