Complete Streets

What is a "Complete Street"?

"Complete Streets" are designed and operated to provide safety and accessibility for all lawful users of our roads and sidewalks, including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, motorists, commercial vehicles, and emergency vehicles and for people of all ages and abilities. Complete Streets principles contribute toward safety, health, economic viability, and quality of life in a community.

Complete Streets principles can provide accessible and efficient connections between home, school, places of work, recreation, and retail destinations by improving the pedestrian and vehicular environments throughout communities. Complete Streets reduce motor vehicle-related crashes and pedestrian risk, as well as bicyclist risk.

The purpose of the Town Medfield Complete Streets policy is to accommodate all road users, permitted by law, by creating a network of facilities that meets the needs of individuals utilizing a variety of transportation modes.

Medfield's Complete Streets Status

MassDOT encourages cities and towns to implement Complete Streets strategies by offering a grant program to fund streetscape projects up to $500,000. To be eligible for the funding, municipalities must undergo a multi-step approval process to gain Complete Streets community status.

Tier 1: The Select Board must draft and adopt a policy outlining their commitment to Complete Streets Principles.

Tier 2: The municipality must draft and submit a Project Prioritization Plan identifying areas in which Complete Streets improvements are feasible and needed.

Tier 3: After MassDOT approves the Project Prioritization Plan (PPP), the municipality is allowed to apply for Complete Streets grant funding for projects included in the PPP.
